 Belt Testing

Belt testing is done for many reasons that are all beneficial for the growth and development of each student.  The following are but a few of the reasons for this tradition.

  1. Goal Setting:  Each student needs to be able to look at a goal, like Black Belt, and work backwards to see and visualize the steps that it will take to reach that goal.  The belts provide those steps.  With proper instruction, the students are able to utilize this ability outside the gym to achieve other goals.
  2. Ability to perform under pressure:  We have all been in a situation that requires us to perform with a great deal of pressure.  Whether it is at work, home or school, everyone has to deal with that sort of situation sometime in their life.  The testing puts them into this situation on a repeated basis so that they can learn how to deal with the situation and perform well when it does come to them.
  3. Meeting Expectations:  At each belt level there are certain expectations that the students must live up to that have been laid out to them by their instructor.  Each student is an individual, so the expectations may vary slightly.  However, testing is a time that the students have to show that they are not only ready for the next step, but that they deserve to move to the next step.
  4. Always have a learning attitude:  Testing is also a time to learn.  Students are required to be at testing even when it is not their turn to test.  They are there to support and encourage the other students as well as learn from the test.  Qualified Master Instructors will be presiding over each and every test conducted and will often stop during the test to give pointers, training tips and short lessons which are extremely valuable and may not be taught during the regular class sessions.

Test Fees:

Test fees are in place to cover certain costs for the testing.  Each test fee covers the cost of the Belt, the boards, Certificate and the Examiner's fee.  Depending on which school that you go to, test fees can vary quite drastically.  Unfortunately, there are many systems that take advantage of the students and their loyalty and charge outrageous prices for their belt tests.  The Schutz Martial Arts Association is dedicated to providing high quality training at a fair cost to you.  The colored belt tests only come about every 3-4 months until the student is in the Brown belt range and then it can be up to 8 months between tests.  As the rank goes up the student needs more time to mature and develop.

Listed below are the belt ranks, time requirements and the fees:

  1. White - Approximately 25 classes -   $30.00
  2. Orange - 3 to 4 months -                   $35.00

Black Belt Fees:

The fees for the Black Belt or Junior Black Belt (under 15 years old) is quite a different structure since now they have the opportunity to be certified through the Kukkiwon.  The Kukkiwon is the World Taekwondo Headquarters and the certification is recognized worldwide.  They can also be certified through the Hyun Moo Kwan which is the parent organization of the Schutz Martial Arts Association.  This is a private certification and may not be recognized throughout the world.  This is the traditional type of certification that was issued before the creation of the Kukkiwon in 1973.
