 Grandmaster Kevin Schutz

GM Schutz with Grandmaster Jae Yoon An, Kukkiwon instructor, at Kukkiwon 7th Dan test

GM Schutz started his martial arts training in 1985 at the age of 12 in a little town in western North Dakota.

During the next several years GM Schutz became quite involved with the competition side of the martial arts earning medals at the local, state and national levels.  He also began assisting with classes at the age of 14 as a green belt.  When he was 15 his instructor had a medical condition which put him into a coma for a few weeks. GM Schutz ran the school during this time as well as during his instructor's recovery.  This action earned him the opportunity to promote to 1st Dan Black Belt by skipping 1st Gup, the last colored belt.  Grandmaster Yun, who had come from a strong military background, explained that, "When the commander gets shot, the troops don't go home.  Someone steps up to become the commander in their absence to lead."

GM Schutz achieved the Black Belt level at the age of 16 and continued along this path until graduating from high school.  He then joined the U.S. Army during the first Gulf War.  During his military service he was selected as a member of the All Army Taekwondo Team.  He was again fortunate enough to work with several different instructor's while stationed in Ft. Lewis, WA and Ft. Polk, LA.  After his military obligation was over he moved back to Minnesota to continue his martial arts training in Taekwondo and Hapkido as well as start his college education.

In 1996, he opened his first schools in Graceville and Wheaton, MN.  He ran these schools while still assisting his instructor at the headquarters gym specializing in competition team training.  In 1998, he opened another school in Alexandria, MN where he resides and continues to teach at to this day.

GM Schutz currently lives in Alexandria, MN, with his wife, Caryn, and their children; Isaiah, Joey, Sophie and Ellie.
